Maj. Gen. V.Vaiksnoras, Chief of Defence Staff, visited Riga on May 29-30 at invitation of Head of Latvian Joint Staff.
Commander of Latvian Armed Forces Gen. Maj. Juris Maklakovs awarded Gen. Maj. V. Vaiksnoras with Latvian Armed Forces Commander 2nd grade Medal of Merit for significant contribution to enhancement of Latvian-Lithuanian bilateral cooperation. The ceremony was also attended by advisor to Lithuanian Ambassador in Latvia Natalija Burbiene.

Meeting in Jaunmoku castle Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Defence Ministers expressed firm determination to continue developing trilateral military cooperation, May 30. Ministers Juozas Olekas, Vinets Veldre and Jaak Aaviksoo signed updated version of defence and military cooperation agreement replacing the old version validated in 1995.

Missile was fired at the camp of Lithuanian-led PRT in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghowr, on May 26 12 p.m. local time (10.30 p.m. Lithuanian time). The missile landed in a small distance from camp fence resulting in no injures.

PRT-7 soldiers and head of Special Mission Aleksandras Matonis and advisor Mantvydas Bekesius visited villages in remote places of Afghanistan, May 25. The visit was organised seeking communication with locals and making clear that further support will be possible only in peaceful and secure environment. Conversion with locals touched upon recent events of May 22 when enraged and aggressive crowd attacked camp of Lithuanian-led PRT in Chaghcharan.

Fallen soldier buried in his home town

On 27 May, the funeral and burial of fallen Lithuanian Sergeant Arūnas Jarmalavičius, who was killed in Afghanistan last week, took place in his hometown of Alytus.
During a solemn ceremony, A. Jarmalavičiuss mother, wife and two children, hundreds of Arūnass fellows in arms were on hand.
