European Union pay attention to Ghowr

Last week European Commission and European Parliament members visited Ghowr province of Afghanistan where Lithuanian military and civilians are in charge of peacekeeping.
Head of the EU Commission Delegation to Kabul Ambassador Hansjoerg Kretschmer was visiting Ghowr on July 30 August 2. Representative of one of the biggest Afghanistans donors was interested in security and economic situation in Ghowr, agenda of local administration, and projects of development cooperation under coordination of the Lithuanian Special Mission.

Thanks for Lithuanian soldiers in Afghanistan

Delegation led by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas visited Chaghcharan on July 31: they met with Governor of Ghowr Baz Mohammad Ahmadi, went to Hospital of Ghowr, took part in opening ceremony of the public park in Chaghcharan. Later the guests met with PRT-7 soldiers deployed in Chaghcharan and listened to a concert Marijonas Mikutavicius gave at request of Juozas Olekas.

Minister of National Defence think of enhancing security of Lithuanian-led PRT camp in Afghanistan

Delegation headed by Minister of National Defence continue the visit in Afghanistan. On July 30 they met with members of Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and NATO ISAF leadership in Kabul. Lithuanian delegation were thanked for valuable contribution of the country in reconstructing Afghanistan and providing stable security conditions. Condolences were offered for the Lithuanian soldier Arunas Jarmalavicius killed in a riot in Ghowr in May.

First contingent of professional soldiers fulfil basic course

First contingent of professional war service soldiers graduated from basic skills course at the Great Lithuanian Hetman Jonusas Radvila Training Regiment on July 31. The first crop of professional soldiers included 7 females and 14 males, age varied from 19 to 33 years.

Nine military will represent Lithuanian Armed Forces in Beijing Olympic Games

Representatives of Lithuanian Armed Forces will leave for Beijing Olympic Games 2008 from Ministry of National Defence on July 31. Nine athletes serving in the National Defence System will participate in the XXIX Olympic Games. Three of them had already left for final stage of preparation in international sports camps abroad.

New Commander of Logistics assigned

New Logistics Commander Lt. Col. Ovidijus Eitminavicius received the flag of Logistics Command from Chief of Defence Lt. Gen. Valdas Tutkus, July 30.
Lt. Col. Ovidijus Eitminavicius was assigned as Logistics Commander from July 26 by order of Minister of National Defence. Before assuming the new office he was heading Logistics Department of the Joint Staff of Lithuanian Armed Forces, and worked as Head of Staff of Logistics Command before that.

Delegation led by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas arrived at Kandahar, Afghanistan, to meet with Lithuanian Special Operations Forces soldiers, July 29. The delegation includes member of the European Parliament Laima Liucija Andrikiene, member of National Security and Defence Committee of Seimas Milda Petrauskiene, Alytus Mayor Ceslovas Daugela, representatives of Foreign Affairs Ministry and Ministry of National Defence.

Logistic Support Units change in Afghanistan

Change of personnel of Logistic Support Unit of Lithuanian-led PRT in Ghowr took place on July 27, Ghowr, Chaghcharan. Thirty two specialists of logistics will be replaced by an incoming unit after nine months of service.

8th rotation of PRT prepare for mission in Afghanistan

First stage of PRT-8 preparation for deployment to Afghanistan, refreshment of basic individual combat skills, will be finished by June 25.
Soldiers completed stage of preparation that lasted from May to June in three groups. Each group underwent two-week course at the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Training Battalion, members of guard squad took part in firing exercise in the United Kingdom.
