US Container & Roll-on/Roll-off ship 2ND LT JOHN P. BOBO is visiting the territorial Baltic Sea waters of Lithuania from May 7 to 10.
The ship carries the amount of equipment and combat gear sufficient to sustain a squadron for up to 30 days. Purpose of the ship is providing logistic support for the US Marine Corps from the sea side. The ship is equipped with various mechanisms for loading and unloading cargo as well as for discharging cargo with a crane; the ship also has capabilities for ensuring supply and maintenance in places where no port is present. 2ND LT JOHN P. BOBO has stocks of various gear used by the US Marine Corps and other resources: military equipment, ammunition, food supplies, hospital equipment, petroleum products and repair parts, etc.
US Container & Roll-on/Roll-off ship 2ND LT JOHN P. BOBO is attached to the Maritime Prepositioning Ship Squadron One of the 6th Fleet of the US Naval Force along with two other ships of the same class navigating the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean , the region of the Mediterranean Sea and territorial waters of the European countries.
The ship maintains steady readiness and can immediately leave the port for any location worldwide carrying combat and support gear used by the US Armed Forces on missions. Ships attached to the Squadron have taken part in the Desert storm operation and Iraqi Freedom operation in the Persian Gulf region.
Prepositioning ships of such class strategically distributed throughout the ocean areas worldwide ensure rapid availability of logistic support during military conflicts, humanitarian crises, etc.
US Naval Force has 32 prepositioning ships of the same or similar classes.
