The Defence Staff of the Ministry of National Defence is the main institution of command of the army in peacetime and of the entire Armed Force of Lithuania in wartime. The Chief of Defence Staff is appointed by the Minister of National Defence on the the recommendation of the Commander of the Armed Forces. The Defence Staff was established in 1996 following the reorganisation of the then operational General Staff.
